The Upstart Youth Development Project was established in 2008 as a subproject of the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies.
Upstart runs a number of programmes across a wide variety of disciplines, providing educational and artistic opportunities for Grahamstown youth.
Upstart is supported by several partner organisations in South Africa that contribute to our programmes in various ways.
It provides opportunities for high school learners with limited access to resources to participate in a variety of programmes and activities. Since its pilot project in 2008-2009, Upstart has expanded rapidly as it has sought to respond to low literacy levels among learners. Unavoidably, it has also needed to respond to other problems affecting learners.
Upstart recently won the Sanlam/MDDA prize for Best Front Pages: Community/Grassroots Media. In awarding the prize, the judge stated that Upstart truly understood their constituency and applauded the consistency of the standard of the front pages.
